MADALYN CAROL CAREY, M.D. born July 10, 1970 departed this life on April 2, 2013 in Chester, Virginia. She was the daughter of the Rev. Drs. James Alfred and Carolyn Sykes Carey of Emporia, Virginia.
She accepted Christ at an early age and as a small child she sang in the choir at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Drewryville, Virginia. She was a member of the Greater Shiloh Baptist Church in Emporia, Virginia where she sang in the choir, attended Sunday school and was involved in many youth activities. She knew and loved the Lord.
Madalyn attended and graduated from Southampton High School in Courtland, Virginia. Her senior year, she was Southampton County High School’s Homecoming Queen. Upon graduation, she attended Howard University, Washington, D.C. and later transferred to Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia majoring in Biology/Pre-Med. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology/Pre-Med and a Master’s Degree in Biology. She attended Spartan Health Science University and majored in Medicine. On December 21, 2001, her degree was conferred as Doctor of Medicine. She graduated with high honors. Her work career began with Clarence Scranage, Jr., M.D., Petersburg, Virginia where she was employed for four years. Afterwards, she was employed with Sujatha Vuyyuru, M.D., Chester, Virginia. She was currently employed as a faculty member at Virginia College, Richmond, Virginia as a Professor in the areas of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Bio-Chemistry. She was a Native American Indian and a member of the Cheroenhaka Indian Tribe in Courtland, Virginia. In the tribe she was known as “Medicine Woman.” Madalyn was a loving and caring person who knew no strangers. Her huge smile could brighten a cloudy day. She loved spending time with her family especially her nieces and nephew. She was one of God’s most precious and beautiful flowers.
She leaves to cherish fond and loving memories her parents Rev. Drs. James and Carolyn Carey, two brothers, James Lawyer Carey, III (Debra) of Prince George, Virginia, Marcus Joel Carey of Emporia, Virginia, two nieces Kalysta L. Carey of Prince George, Va., Jolie S. Carey of Johnstown, Pa., one nephew, Jakwame A. Carey of Emporia, Virginia, her Godmother, Judith Epps of Emporia, Va., her best friend Debra, cousins , other family members and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Greater Shiloh Baptist Church Emporia, Virginia. Rev. J. Alfred Carey, Pastor, Eulogist, Minister Dorothy Wood, Officiating. Interment will follow in Reese-Sykes Cemetery Emporia, Virginia.
